Accra Court Reminds 41 Illegal Miners Into Police Custody
In a crackdown on illegal mining activities in Ghana, the Accra High Court has remanded 41 individuals into police custody. These individuals were arrested during a police raid targeting illegal miners at Samreboi in the Western Region. The operation, executed on April 17 and April 18, 2025, focused on illegal activities along the Tano and Subri Rivers.
Among the 41 suspects are eight Chinese nationals, four women, and several local individuals. During the court proceedings, their pleas were not taken. The High Court has instructed the defence lawyers to file bail applications by April 24, with the prosecution’s response expected by April 28. The accused are set to reappear in court on May 2 for further proceedings.

This operation is part of a broader effort led by Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to combat illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey.” A recent reshuffle of divisional and district commanders in mining-prone regions, including Eastern South, Western, and Western North, marked a renewed anti-galamsey initiative.
During the four-day intelligence-led mission, law enforcement officials arrested a total of 47 suspects, including 39 Ghanaians. The police seized various items, such as excavators, vehicles, and firearms, from the suspects. The police service remains committed to maintaining its pressure on illegal mining operations that threaten the country’s environment.
The Inspector-General assures the public that all parties involved in illegal mining activities will face the full extent of the law, irrespective of their nationality or social status. This decisive action underscores Ghana’s determination to protect its natural resources and uphold legal accountability.
