Alleged Security Operatives Bulldoze McDan Depot in Spintex
On July 28, 2025, a warehouse owned by Ghanaian businessman Dr. Daniel McKorley (McDan) on Spintex Road, Accra, was demolished by alleged national security operatives around 7:00 p.m. Workers reported that operatives arrived in two pickups with excavators, ignoring pleas to retrieve personal belongings, including beds, from the site used as shelter.
The operation faced delays when two excavators broke down, requiring a third to complete the demolition. Workers, including a security guard, said no explanation was provided, and they were barred from salvaging items. The warehouse, adjacent to Action Chapel, was under construction and linked to a land dispute with the Ghana Airports Company Limited.
The demolition follows a 2023 incident where McDan, as Ghana Trade Fair board chair, authorized a similar action against Raymond Archer, now EOCO head, raising allegations of politically motivated business targeting. No official statement from the McDan Group or state agencies has clarified the July 28 operation’s motive.
The incident sparked concerns after operatives detained JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony and assaulted a civilian during coverage, seizing Carlony’s phone. The Ghana Journalists Association condemned the attack, citing threats to press freedom. The operation mirrors past demolitions, like the 2022 CSIR-ARI exercise, reclaiming encroached lands.
REGSEC, led by Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, has intensified efforts against unauthorized structures, as seen in the May 2025 Sakumo Ramsar site demolitions. The McDan case underscores ongoing tensions over land ownership and state-led enforcement in Accra’s urban development.
