Modi Highlights India’s Democracy in Ghana Parliament Speech


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stunned Ghana’s Parliament on July 2, 2025, during a historic address, revealing that India has over 2,500 political parties. Speaking in Accra as part of his five-nation tour, Modi called India the “mother of democracy,” emphasizing its diverse political landscape.

Modi, the first Indian PM to address Ghana’s Parliament in over 30 years, highlighted India’s democratic strength, noting 20 different parties govern its states and it has 22 official languages. The revelation drew gasps and applause, with Ghanaian MPs, some in Indian attire like pagdis, visibly impressed by India’s vibrant democracy.

He praised Ghana as a “beacon of democratic inspiration” in Africa, urging stronger ties through shared values. Modi invited Ghanaian lawmakers to visit India’s new Parliament building and pushed for global reforms to amplify the Global South’s voice, including at the upcoming BRICS Summit.

The speech, part of Modi’s visit to strengthen India-Ghana relations, covered trade, health, and security cooperation. He described their bond as “sweeter than Ghana’s sugar loaf pineapple,” delighting the audience. Modi also met President Mahama and engaged with the Indian community in Accra.
