Six-Hour Downtime for System Upgrade

MTN Ghana announced a six-hour suspension of its Mobile Money (MoMo) services from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on August 17, 2025, to conduct a system upgrade. The downtime will halt all MoMo transactions, including sending, receiving, depositing, withdrawing, fund transfers, and bill payments.

Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology and Service Delivery Officer at Mobile Money Limited, stated that the upgrade aims to enhance service quality and reliability. The planned maintenance, affecting MTN’s 14 million MoMo users, is critical for improving transaction efficiency and system stability.

Assah apologized for the inconvenience and urged customers to complete urgent transactions before the shutdown. The upgrade follows MTN’s recent network enhancements, which boosted 4G coverage to 85% of Ghana’s population, supporting the growing demand for digital financial services.

The suspension aligns with MTN’s commitment to seamless service, handling over 50 million monthly MoMo transactions. Customers are encouraged to plan to avoid disruptions, especially for time-sensitive payments, as Ghana’s mobile money market continues to drive financial inclusion.

The company expressed gratitude for user patience and promised updates post-upgrade. The initiative reflects MTN’s focus on modernizing infrastructure to meet the needs of Ghana’s digital economy, valued at $1.2 billion in 2024.
