The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MoMAG) has issued a warning to the Ghanaian government, threatening a nationwide strike if immediate action is not taken to address the effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey. In a statement, the group expressed concerns over the environmental degradation, water pollution, and increased risks to human lives caused by galamsey.
MoMAG highlighted the impact of illegal mining on mobile money agents, including the increased risk of armed robbery and the destruction of infrastructure in mining-affected areas. “Illegal mining is posing severe threats to our environment, economy, and human lives,” the statement read.
The group further warned that if the government fails to act, they will initiate an indefinite strike, which could severely disrupt mobile money transactions, salary disbursements, and financial services across the country.
MoMAG has called for stricter enforcement of mining laws, alternative livelihoods for illegal miners, and measures to protect mobile money agents and customers from the consequences of galamsey activities.
