The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana has announced a nationwide strike starting on Thursday, September 26, 2024, to protest against poor working conditions and unresolved grievances. In a statement issued on September 17, General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan outlined the reasons for the strike, including unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2020 and a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), which puts workers at risk of contracting diseases.
The association also expressed frustration over the government’s failure to provide financial clearance for the recruitment of 500 additional staff. Mortuary workers are struggling with an increased workload due to insufficient manpower, exacerbating the challenges they face in their demanding roles.
Furthermore, the workers are demanding the payment of a COVID-19 bonus that has not yet been disbursed. Despite their frontline efforts during the pandemic, they have yet to receive the promised compensation. The association emphasized that the government’s inaction on these critical issues has left them with no choice but to strike.
The strike is expected to have significant repercussions on mortuary services across the country. The Mortuary Workers Association is calling on the government to urgently address their concerns to avoid a prolonged disruption.
