MOWAG Demands Improved Conditions Amid Negotiation Talks
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has warned of a potential strike if negotiations with the government for better working conditions fail. General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan, speaking on 3FM Sunrise on May 22, 2025, emphasized that a strike would be a last resort, pending the outcome of ongoing discussions.
MOWAG highlighted persistent challenges faced by its members, particularly the lack of adequate protective equipment and proper ventilation. Jordan noted that these deficiencies expose workers to viruses and pathogens, compromising their safety given the hazardous nature of their job.
Last year, MOWAG suspended an indefinite strike to allow the government time to address demands, including sufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), payment of salary arrears, and financial clearance to hire 500 additional mortuary workers. The association stressed that current safety measures remain insufficient.
Jordan reiterated the union’s commitment to finding common ground through dialogue. However, he warned that failure to meet their demands for improved conditions could lead to industrial action, underscoring the urgency of resolving these critical workplace issues.
