Muntaka Mubarak Announces Crackdown on Major Streets Across the Country

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak announced a nationwide operation to remove beggars and street dwellers from five major Ghanaian cities, including Tamale, during a visit to the Northern Region on May 22, 2025. The initiative, in collaboration with security services, aims to restore order and decency to urban areas.

Speaking at the commissioning of a 24-unit apartment block for the Ghana Immigration Service in Tamale, Muntaka revealed that a recent operation in Accra apprehended over 2,000 foreign beggars. Nearly half have been repatriated, with the remainder set to be processed and removed by the end of the week.

The minister also issued a warning to prostitutes operating openly on city streets, stating they face removal and repatriation to their home countries. He described beggars as a national security threat, emphasizing the government’s resolve to address the issue comprehensively.

Muntaka urged individuals to leave voluntarily or face forced removal, affirming that the ministry will relentlessly pursue the operation until all targeted individuals are cleared from the streets of Ghana’s major cities.
