Traditional leaders back MP’s call for inclusive Eid public holidays.
The National Conference of Muslim Kings and Paramount Chiefs (NACOKINGS) has thrown its support behind a Private Members Bill submitted by Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, seeking an extension and increment of Muslim holidays in Ghana. The bill aims to amend the Public Holidays Act 2001, proposing additional days for Eid Al-Adha and Eidul-Fitr to promote inclusiveness and religious diversity.
NACOKINGS expressed appreciation for MP Sosu’s initiative, commending the bold step toward advocating for extended Muslim holidays. The organization, representing Muslim Kings, chiefs, and Imams in Ghana, urged all Members of Parliament, regardless of their religious affiliations, to support the bill’s passage.
Sheikh Dr. Al-Hussein Zakaria, spokesperson for NACOKINGS, emphasized the traditional mandate of Muslim Kings and chiefs in appointing Imams at various levels. He noted that any appointments made without the consultation and approval of Muslim traditional leaders would be deemed inconsequential. Sheikh Dr. Al-Hussein Zakaria warned against attempts by individuals or groups to undermine the authority of traditional leaders in appointing Imams, stating that such actions could lead to instability.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue and lawful means in resolving differences, NACOKINGS emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence, especially as the country approaches the campaign season. The organization’s backing of the bill aligns with its commitment to promoting religious harmony and recognizing the cultural and traditional roles of Muslim leaders in Ghana.
