Ashanti Region Braces for Rainy Season with NADMO’s Proactive Measures
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Ghana’s Ashanti Region is ramping up efforts to prevent flooding as the rainy season approaches in May 2025. NADMO is focusing on flood-prone communities like Owabi, Aboabo Pelele, and Bremang UGC, where past floods have caused significant damage.
Last year, dozens of lives were lost to flood-related incidents in the region, exacerbated by construction on waterways, silted drains, and indiscriminate waste dumping. This year, NADMO is shifting its strategy from disaster response to prevention, with Ashanti Regional Director Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim leading the charge. The organization is prioritizing the desilting and dredging of major streams and clogged gutters to ensure smooth water flow.
To strengthen their approach, NADMO staff are undergoing intensive training on disaster prevention techniques. The organization is also collaborating with stakeholders to tackle the flooding challenge head-on. “With the necessary support, we aim to prevent or significantly reduce flooding this year,” Nasir emphasized, highlighting the importance of collective action.
Meanwhile, some residents in high-risk zones are taking precautions. A few have relocated, while others are clearing blocked drains to minimize potential damage. With these combined efforts, the Ashanti Region hopes to mitigate the devastating impacts of the impending rains, which have historically caused loss of life and property across communities.
