Supreme Court Postpones Menzgold CEO’s Plea to Stop Fraud Case
The Supreme Court adjourned Nana Appiah Mensah’s (NAM1) request to halt his ongoing criminal trial at the High Court on July 8, 2025, as reported by 3News. The Menzgold CEO, facing 39 charges tied to a 2016-2018 gold trading scheme, sought to pause the case, but the hearing is now set for October 7, 2025.
NAM1’s legal team, following a Court of Appeal rejection in May 2025, argued for a stay of proceedings, claiming the case should be treated as civil, not criminal. The charges include defrauding by false pretences, with over GH¢1.6 billion allegedly collected from 16,000 investors. NAM1 insists he is willing to settle his debts if the matter is reclassified as a civil matter.
The adjournment follows NAM1’s dismissal of comparisons to Nana Agradaa’s fraud case, emphasizing his case’s unique nature. The High Court had rejected his no-case submission, prompting the Supreme Court appeal. The trial involves allegations of operating an unlicensed deposit-taking business, causing significant financial losses.
The Menzgold scandal, which shut down in 2018 after Bank of Ghana orders, has left thousands of investors demanding refunds. NAM1’s legal battles have since drawn public attention, with others’ frustration over delays and hopes for justice. The Supreme Court’s decision could impact the trial’s direction.
As the case moves to October, NAM1 remains on bail, and his team plans further legal options. The public awaits clarity on whether the trial will proceed or shift to a civil resolution, with the outcome set to influence Ghana’s fight against financial fraud.
