The maiden edition of the Aboakyer Triathlon Race was successfully held in Winneba on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as part of the Aboakyer festival celebrations. The event, organized by the National Sports College, Winneba, and the Ghana Triathlon Federation in collaboration with the Effutu Traditional Council, attracted over 30 participants.
Paul Doevi emerged as the winner with a time of 37:51.33, followed closely by Promise Ahetor in second place with a time of 39:03.38, and Alexander Selasie Adomey in third place with a time of 44:55.89.
In a remarkable display, Mercy Jane Pappoe, the only female participant, thrilled the spectators and took home goodies and a branded shirt with a time of 46:52.77. Her participation and determination served as an inspiration to the community and fellow athletes. The winners were awarded with goodies from the organizers, and some participants from the community also received goodies and branded shirts from the National Sports College, Winneba.
Speaking after the race, Paul Doevi expressed gratitude to the organizers and called for more support from corporate entities to enhance his training and performances. He emphasized the need for resources to participate in international competitions and take Ghanaian triathlon to greater heights.
The Director of the National Sports College and President of the Ghana Triathlon Federation, Mr. Bawa Fuseini, acknowledged the tremendous support from the Effutu Traditional Council. He outlined plans to collaborate with stakeholders to develop and promote triathlon in the community, including supplying equipment and materials to equip coaches.
Nenyi Amankosam, a representative from the Effutu Traditional Council, praised the initiative, stating that the introduction of triathlon would go a long way to propel the youth to achieve greatness and also serve as a medium of job creation. He commended the Director of the National Sports College for the insightful decision to promote the sport in Winneba.
The successful hosting of the Aboakyer Triathlon Race marks a significant milestone in promoting triathlon in Ghana. With plans in place for future events, the National Sports College and Ghana Triathlon Federation are poised to take the sport to new heights, providing opportunities for athletes and contributing to the development of sports in the community.
The event was graced by top dignitaries, including community leaders and distinguished guests from the Winneba police enclave.
