3 Wontumi Radio Stations Part of The Suspended Stations

The National Communications Authority (NCA) suspended nine radio stations on August 12, 2025, for failing to comply with broadcasting regulations after a 30-day grace period granted by President John Mahama expired. The stations, including three owned by Wontumi Multimedia, breached rules under the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).

Offences included unauthorized use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link frequencies, unapproved transmitter locations, and operating without a Certificate of Compliance, violating Regulation 54. The NCA’s action targets non-compliance across Ghana’s 600+ licensed radio stations, ensuring accountability in the broadcasting sector, critical for public communication.

The NCA’s August 12 statement emphasized that the suspensions aim to enforce order and responsible stewardship, not punishment. The affected stations, servicing regions like Ashanti and Greater Accra, face operational halts until compliance is restored, impacting their 1.2 million weekly listeners.

The suspensions follow a July 10 directive suspending 47 stations, with 38 resolving issues during the grace period. The NCA is intensifying monitoring to ensure adherence, aligning with the government’s push for regulatory discipline under the Mahama administration’s media governance reforms.

Affected operators were urged to rectify breaches to resume operations, with potential fines or license revocations for non-compliance. The NCA’s actions underscore efforts to maintain a regulated broadcasting environment, protecting public interest and fair competition.
