Communal tensions erupt in destruction of vehicles, houses, and school properties.
A communal clash on New Year’s Day has resulted in widespread vandalism in the Atwima Agogo and Atwima Twedie communities in Ghana. The conflict, stemming from a Christmas Eve misunderstanding between the two communities, escalated into a violent confrontation leading to the destruction of vehicles, houses, and school properties.
Eyewitnesses report that residents of Atwima Agogo allegedly attacked their counterparts from Atwima Twedie, triggering the destructive retaliation. The aftermath of the clash left several properties in both communities damaged, causing fear and disruption to daily life.
In response to the escalating violence, police intervention was required to bring the situation under control. Despite their efforts, the aftermath of the clash has instilled fear among residents, affecting transport services and daily activities.
During Citi News‘ visit to the area, it was evident that transport operators were hesitant to use their vehicles for fear of further violence. The assembly member for Twedie electoral area, Augustine Osei, has called for increased security measures to restore peace in the region.
One affected driver, Michael Kwaku Boateng, who had his vehicle vandalized, is urging authorities to compensate those who suffered losses during the clashes. Police sources have revealed that, as of now, no arrests have been made, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. The communities are left grappling with the aftermath, emphasizing the need for swift and comprehensive interventions to address the tensions and prevent further escalation.
