Police Restore Calm After Security Breach at Newmont Mining Site
The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Ntotroso following a violent security breach at Newmont’s mining site on January 8, 2025. The incident involved an attempted gold theft, which led to a confrontation between police and suspects, resulting in three deaths and four injuries.
Police officers were forced to engage with the attackers to bring the situation under control. In response, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, collaborated with the Regional Police team to de-escalate tensions by engaging community leaders and youth to prevent further violence or reprisals.
To ensure public safety, a reinforcement team has been deployed to maintain order, and a special investigation team from Accra is thoroughly examining the incident.
The deceased individuals, confirmed to be Muslims, will be released to their families for burial today, January 9, 2025, following legal protocols.
The police have urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with investigators, and refrain from any actions that could disrupt the peace. The situation in Ntotroso has since stabilized, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of law enforcement.
