NIA clears card backlog and invites new applicants for free registration
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun issuing Ghana Cards to applicants who registered between June 2023 and now but have not yet received them. Starting April 7, 2025, all District Offices in the Greater Accra Region will be open for both card issuance and new registrations. Applicants are advised to return to the specific District Office where they initially registered to collect their cards. The Authority emphasized that individuals should present their registration receipts or necessary documents when picking up their cards.
The NIA is also encouraging all Ghanaians aged 15 years and above who have not yet registered for the Ghana Card to visit any NIA District Office in Greater Accra. This move aims to boost national identification coverage as the Ghana Card has become essential for accessing various services such as banking, mobile SIM registration, and voting. The Authority stressed that both the issuance of backlog cards and new registrations are entirely free of charge.
While registration and card collection are free, the NIA reminded the public that replacement cards and updates to personal records, such as changes in name or date of birth, will still attract a fee. The Authority warned applicants not to pay any unauthorized fees and encouraged them to report any staff members who demand money for free services. Hotlines and reporting channels have been provided at all District Offices to ensure quick responses to complaints.
The NIA’s statement highlights its commitment to transparency and efficiency in clearing the backlog and registering new applicants. This exercise is seen as crucial for enabling more Ghanaians to participate fully in the country’s digital and financial systems. The Authority believes that by making the process accessible and free, it can accelerate the achievement of universal national identification.

Ghanaians are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure they get their Ghana Cards without delay. By promoting vigilance and transparency during this registration drive, the NIA hopes to foster trust and boost the nationwide adoption of the Ghana Card. Applicants should remain alert, comply with the process, and report any irregularities immediately to safeguard the integrity of the system.
