The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced its plan to recommence the registration and issuance of Ghana Cards to Ghanaians aged 15 and above who are applying for the card for the first time. This service will be provided at no cost to eligible applicants.

Starting on August 28, 2023, this registration service will be available at eight out of NIA’s 16 Regional Offices, as well as at all 276 district offices across the nation. However, the specified service will not be available at the following regional offices: Kumasi (Ashanti Region), Sunyani (Bono Region), Techiman (Bono East Region), Koforidua (Eastern Region), Tamale (Northern Region), Ho (Volta Region), Takoradi (Western Region), and Sefwi Wiawso (Western North Region).

The resumption of this registration exercise has been made possible due to the receipt of 484,000 blank cards from the NIA’s technical partners, Identity Management Systems II Limited (IMS II), and CalBank PLC. This initiative was driven by the Ministry of Finance. As a result, eligible Ghanaians who have not yet registered for the Ghana Card will now have the opportunity to do so.

The registration process will be conducted in two phases to ensure a smooth and well-organized procedure. The first phase, lasting ten working days from August 28 to September 8, 2023, will be exclusively reserved for public sector workers on the Government of Ghana (GoG) payroll who are yet to register for the Ghana Card.

The second phase, starting on September 11, 2023, will be open to all Ghanaians aged 15 and above who have not previously applied for the Ghana Card. During this phase, individuals seeking to replace lost, stolen, or damaged Ghana Cards, or wishing to correct their names or dates of birth, can do so at any of the NIA’s 286 operational offices nationwide.

The NIA emphasized the importance of the Ghana Card, highlighting that it is the mandatory identification document for citizens engaging in various commercial transactions and accessing a wide range of public and private services in Ghana. Eligible Ghanaian citizens who have yet to register for the Ghana Card are encouraged to seize this opportunity.
