Largest Drug Bust in Recent History Uncovered in Cape Coast


The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has intercepted a massive consignment of cocaine weighing 3.3 tonnes, en route to Accra from the Western Region. The operation, conducted on March 4, 2025, at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast, uncovered 143 sacks of cocaine hidden beneath sand in a tipper truck traveling from Takoradi to Weija, Accra.

Operation Leads to Major Seizure

Acting on intelligence reports, NIB operatives intercepted the truck, which had two occupants onboard.Following the seizure, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) conducted field testing, confirming the substance as raw cocaine. The initial consignment weighed 2,974 kilograms.

A follow-up operation on March 8, 2025, led NIB officers to a suspect’s residence, where an additional 13 sacks and one bag of suspected cocaine were discovered, totaling 345.07 kilograms.

High-Purity Cocaine Worth Over $350 Million

Laboratory tests conducted by NACOC and the Ghana Standards Authority confirmed the total weight of the seized cocaine at 3,319.68 kilograms.

The high-purity cocaine, ranging from 50% to 70% purity, is estimated to have a street value exceeding $350 million. Authorities suspect the drugs entered the country via sea, using fishing vessels to transport them undetected.

Suspects Arrested, More on the Run

Two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to reappear in court on April 2, 2025.

Meanwhile, the NIB has identified additional suspects who are currently at large, with ongoing efforts to track and arrest all individuals involved in the operation.

The interception of over 3.3 tonnes of cocaine marks one of the largest drug seizures in Ghana’s history, intensifying calls for stricter security measures at ports and borders.

Law enforcement agencies have vowed to dismantle the networks responsible for trafficking illicit drugs into the country. As the investigation unfolds, security agencies continue to pursue leads, ensuring that those responsible face the full force of the law.
