Fire at Nigerian Islamic School Kills 17 Children, Leaves Many Injured

A devastating Islamic school fire in Kauran Namoda, Zamfara State, has claimed the lives of 17 children, with several others injured and receiving treatment at local health centers.

The blaze reportedly started in a nearby house on Tuesday night before spreading to the school dormitory, where students—aged between 10 and 16—were asleep.

According to Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar, the deceased children were buried on Wednesday afternoon. Officials say that nearly 100 pupils were inside the school at the time of the fire, with many of them coming from nearby villages.

Authorities Investigate The Islamic School Fire Outbreak, Promise Safety Measures

Eyewitness Yahaya Mahi told BBC Hausa that the school’s location and narrow roads made it difficult for firefighters to reach the scene in time.

“Even if the firefighters had come on time, reaching the house would’ve been difficult due to the tight road leading to the house,” he said.

In response to the tragedy, local official Mannir Haidara announced plans to inspect other Islamic schools in the area to identify fire risks and prevent similar incidents.

“We’ll take measures to prevent another occurrence of this nature,” he assured.

Despite the tragedy, a grieving father of one of the victims expressed his faith in God, saying it was his only source of comfort in this difficult time.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire while focusing on helping the injured recover.
