Tragic Stampede at Nigerian Funfair Kills Several Children
A stampede at a funfair in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, has claimed the lives of several children, with many others injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Islamic High School in Basorun, near Lagos, during an event organized for families. State governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the tragedy and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
“This is a very sad day,” Makinde said, expressing condolences to grieving families. Security forces arrested the event organizers, identified as the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation. The group had planned to host up to 5,000 children, offering scholarships and prizes, according to local media reports.
Emergency services deployed teams to assist victims, while injured children were rushed to local hospitals. Parents have been urged to check for missing persons. Videos from the scene show a chaotic crowd and children being carried away from the venue.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the stampede. “Anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable,” Makinde said. The tragedy has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyful event, leaving families in mourning.
