Nominations Open, Five Candidates Declare Intent
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) opened nominations for its 2028 presidential primaries on July 29, 2025, with the election scheduled for January 31, 2026, as announced by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK) at the party’s Accra headquarters. Nominations close on August 28, 2025, with vetting set for September 15–22.
Aspirants must pay a non-refundable GH¢100,000 application fee via banker’s draft and a GH¢500,000 filing fee, with an additional compulsory development fee to be determined. Delegates include members of the National Council, National Executive Committee, Regional Executive Committee, former Regional Executives, and Constituency Executive Committee.
Five candidates have declared their intent: Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (former Education Minister, Bosomtwe MP), Dr. Bryan Acheampong (former Agriculture Minister, Abetifi MP), Kennedy Agyapong (former Assin Central MP), Kwabena Agyapong (former NPP General Secretary), and Boakye Agyarko (former Energy Minister). Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President, is also a contender.
The primaries follow the NPP’s 2024 election loss, where Bawumia secured 41.61% against John Mahama’s 56.55%. The party aims to unify ranks early to challenge the NDC in 2028. A nine-member committee, led by Joseph Osei Owusu, will oversee the July 2025 National Delegates Conference for constitutional amendments.
Bawumia leads with 77.9% delegate support per a July 2025 poll, followed by Kennedy Agyapong at 20.2%. The competitive race, with early primaries, seeks to strengthen the NPP’s strategy to regain power.
