Deputy AG Reveals Progress in NSS Fraud Probe

Ghana’s Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that 22 suspects have been identified in a massive fraud at the National Service Scheme (NSS) involving over GH¢500 million. The scandal centers on ghost names—fake names on the payroll—used to steal funds meant for national service workers.

Speaking on JoyNews, Srem-Sai said the investigation, led by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), is complete, and a case is being built for prosecution. Some suspects, including former NSS officials, are willing to return the stolen money. This could reduce the number of people facing court, as the state weighs recovering funds versus lengthy trials.

The fraud was uncovered after a headcount ordered by the Finance Minister found 81,885 ghost names on the NSS payroll. Two officials, former Deputy Director Kwaku Ohene Gyan and accountant Yaw Danso, were arrested in February 2025. Some suspects have fled Ghana, prompting President Mahama to order their assets frozen and declare them wanted.

Earlier reports also alleged a Member of Parliament was paid to silence media coverage of the scandal, though the lawmaker’s name remains undisclosed. The Attorney General’s office is under pressure to reveal this person to ensure transparency and protect Parliament’s reputation.

The NSS scandal is still a shock to Ghanaians, as the stolen funds could have supported young graduates serving the country. The government is pushing for quick action to recover the money and punish those responsible, aiming to restore trust in the system.
