Ugandan opposition figure Bobi Wine was injured after being shot in the leg during a confrontation with police near Kampala. Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, was reportedly injured in Bulindo, Wakiso District, while accompanied by supporters. The National Unity Platform, Wine’s political party, claims that Ugandan security forces targeted Wine in an assassination attempt, leaving him seriously injured.

There has been no official statement from Ugandan authorities regarding the incident. This is the first time Wine has been wounded during frequent confrontations with police. Wine, popular among young Ugandans, ran for president in 2021, losing to longtime President Yoweri Museveni in an election Wine claims was rigged.

Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, has resisted calls to announce his retirement. Uganda has not experienced a peaceful transfer of power since gaining independence in 1962, heightening tensions between the government and opposition groups like Wine’s.
