The maiden Oil and Gas Measurement and Metering Summit was held in Accra on Wednesday, 2nd July, 2025, bringing together industry experts to discuss the importance of accurate metering in the oil and gas sector. The summit, organized by Engineers and Brew solutions limited, and on the theme, “Unlocking Value Through Accurate Metering: The Key to Efficient Operations,” aimed to address issues affecting Ghana’s oil & gas metering and recommend proper ways to improve the industry, which is a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in the oil and gas sector.

Addressing the audience, Mr. Reynolds Brew, Managing Director of Engineers and Brew solutions, emphasized that accurate metering is crucial for optimizing operations, ensuring value delivery to stakeholders, and minimizing waste and costs.

“Accurate metering is the backbone of our industry,” Mr. Brew said. “It enables us to measure, monitor, and optimize our operations, ensuring that we deliver value to our stakeholders while minimizing waste and reducing costs.” He added that inaccurate metering can lead to significant losses in efficiency and even safety risks.

Hon. Kofi Bentil, Member of Parliament for Mpohor and a member of the Environmental committee advocated for a sustainable system with stakeholders collaborations to ensure successful energy sector. He also urged energy sector institutions to adhere to the various regulations and guidelines. He was speaking on Driving Sustainable Capability and Future Growth.

The Ranking Member, Committee on Energy, Hon. George Aboagye, stressed that Ghana and indeed Africa is ready to lead in the frontier of accurate, accountable and technological advanced measurement in the oil and gas sector,” He emphasized the need for local expertise and capacity building, saying, “Ghana is home to engineers, technicians and thinkers capable of solving complex industrial challenges of precision and innovation.”

He also urged Brew Solutions to continue investing in training, mentoring, and certifying local professionals so that Ghana can not only participate but lead measurement operations across West Africa.

The Ranking Member also stressed the importance of collaborative governance, saying, “Measurement and metering are not the responsibility of one company, one minister or one contractor. They are the shared responsibility of the whole ecosystem, regulators, private regulators, standards agencies and academia.” He added that solutions should be sustainable, adaptable to new energy sources, and operated by local talent for decades to come.

Mr. George Nii Tettey, a PMP measurement engineer (UAE), highlighted the importance of accurate metering in preventing losses. He cited an example of an oil field producing 100,000 barrels a day with a 1% error in the metering system, resulting in a loss of over $20 million annually.

“We need to go back to the basics and have a look at the metering systems that we have installed over the years,” Mr. Tettey said. “Are they being validated? Are they being calibrated? Are they even certified before being installed?” He emphasized the need for regular checks and balances to ensure accurate metering.

The summit also discussed the need for modern metering systems, such as ultrasonic meters and co-release meters, to be installed in oil and gas fields. Mr. Tettey suggested that check metering, where one meter is active metering and another meter confirms what is being metered, can help identify and resolve errors. “By investing in modern metering systems and implementing regular checks and balances, we can ensure accurate metering and prevent losses,” he added.

Speaking on Local Expertise and Capacity Building, Nilesh Tawde, General Manager of RMG Messtechnik, Middle East and Africa (UAE), reiterated the need to invest in sustainable metering systems to ensure quality delivery in oil and gas.

According to him, “Collaboration between government and industry players is crucial in developing local capacity for measurement and metering, and we are poised to work with stakeholders to supply metering equipment across all sectors.

“The event aligns with the government’s mission to boost local content in the oil and gas industry. By developing local capacity for measurement and metering, Ghana can create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and increase its participation in the industry.

Representatives from the Ghana Standards Authority, Petroleum Hubs Development Corporation, Ghana National Gas shared their messages and reiterated the need for sustainable metering systems across board. They also acknowledged Engineers and Brew solutions limited for the insightful organization of the summit.

In attendance at the maiden event were foreign investors, government dignitaries from the oil and gas committees, Members of Parliament, and others.
