NDC to Prioritize Sanitation and Urban Order in Accra – Oko Vanderpuije

Former Accra Mayor and current Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-led government will take bold measures to resolve Accra’s sanitation crisis, congestion, and general indiscipline.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SONA), he stressed that District Chief Executives (DCEs) will be directed to prioritize sanitation and urban order immediately after they are sworn into office.

“Very soon, we will have our District Chief Executives, and when that is done, they will be informed and instructed to ensure that we reset all operations, and the sanitation issue will be taken care of.

NDC’s Vision for a Cleaner and Organized Accra

Accra has long struggled with poor waste management, indiscriminate refuse dumping, clogged drainage systems, and unauthorized street trading.

Despite various policies introduced by previous administrations—including the Sanitation and Pollution Levy and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources—the city continues to grapple with waste-related issues and urban congestion.

Oko Vanderpuije highlighted the NDC’s decisive victory in the 2024 elections as a clear mandate from the people for real change and effective governance.

“We will deal with congestion and the illegal activities of traders. All other matters of concern will be addressed. That is what we campaigned on, and the people voted massively for us, so we will make Ghana work again.”

A Call for Sustainable Urban Development

The NDC’s strategy will focus on:

  • Strengthening waste management systems to prevent indiscriminate dumping.
  • Clearing unauthorized street trading to reduce congestion in major commercial areas.
  • Enhancing drainage infrastructure to tackle flooding.
  • Enforcing sanitation laws to promote public discipline.

With the NDC-led administration set to revitalize institutions and restore public confidence, Accra residents anticipate concrete actions to transform the capital into a cleaner and more organized city.

Alfred Oko Vanderpuije’s pledge to prioritize sanitation and urban order signals the NDC government’s commitment to addressing Accra’s long-standing waste and congestion problems. As new DCEs take office, their swift action on these challenges will be critical in delivering the change Ghanaians voted for.
