Nollywood Star Omoni Oboli Threatens Legal Action Against Ghanaian TV Stations
Renowned Nollywood actress and producer Omoni Oboli has vowed to take legal action against several Ghanaian television stations for broadcasting her films without authorization. In a fiery Instagram post on March 9, Oboli expressed outrage over what she described as a blatant disregard for intellectual property rights.
Oboli questioned whether Ghana had any regulatory body to protect creative works, stressing the massive investment, hard work, and sleepless nights that go into producing her films.
“I love my Ghanaian besties, colleagues, and friends, but those TV stations in Ghana, I’m coming for you! The guts to show my movies without licensing! If one of you is not arrested, you won’t learn!” she wrote.
A Growing Concern Among Nigerian Filmmakers
The issue of intellectual property theft has been a longstanding concern among Nigerian creatives. In September 2023, Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri also accused Ghanaian TV stations of illegally broadcasting her content, raising alarms about the widespread nature of the problem.
Oboli made it clear that she would not tolerate the infringement, stating:
“You have no idea how much work goes into these projects. The sleepless nights I have! You will pay for every one of my movies you have shown without permission! In 2025, you still don’t understand IP theft?!”
Legal Action to Set a Precedent
Oboli’s decision to pursue legal action signals a growing demand for stronger copyright enforcement in the Ghanaian entertainment industry. While it remains unclear which stations will face lawsuits, her stance has sparked discussions on the need for stricter intellectual property laws to protect filmmakers in the region.
