Ghana Launches Smart Schools Project at Opoku Ware SHS

Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) in Kumasi was commissioned as Ghana’s first Smart School, under the Ghana Smart Schools Project. The initiative, launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in March 2024, aims to transform secondary education through digitalization, equipping schools with advanced technology.

Lawrence Hornuvo, General Manager of KA Technologies, announced at the ceremony that the project introduces smart classrooms with interactive screens, tablets for each student, reliable internet, solar-powered charging cabinets, and ergonomic furniture. These facilities utilize the KATON360 Learning Management System for interactive teaching, real-time assessments, and personalized learning.

Opoku Ware School named Ghana’s first Smart School under national digital education program.

Hornuvo revealed that 1,350,000 Students’ Mate Tablets have been assembled, with 334,489 distributed to first-year students in regions including Oti, Ahafo, and Bono. Nationwide distribution is scheduled for June 2025, supported by comprehensive training for teachers and students to maximize the KATON360 platform’s educational content.

The headmaster, Rev. Fr. Steven Owusu Sekyere, pledged to ensure proper use of the facilities and urged the government to expedite solar charging system installations in dormitories. Hornuvo called for enhanced internet infrastructure and streamlined procurement of solar cabinets to support the project’s success.

The Ghana Smart Schools Project aligns with the Ministry of Education’s digitalization strategy, aiming to equip students for the fourth industrial revolution. The initiative seeks to bridge educational inequalities, positioning Ghana as a continental leader in technology-driven learning.
