Speaker Bagbin Hails Milestone for Ghana’s Democracy
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin swore in Ewurabena Aubynn as the new MP for Ablekuma North, completing Parliament’s 276-member composition, with 41 women MPs. Bagbin called the development a “blessing” for Ghana’s democracy during the ceremony. Aubynn’s victory in the July 11 rerun secured the NDC a two-thirds majority.
The Ablekuma North seat was vacant for over six months due to disputed 2024 election results, necessitating a rerun across 19 polling stations. Aubynn, backed by NDC’s Joshua Alabi, defeated NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who contested independently after the NPP’s boycott. The rerun faced violence, including assaults on Afriyie and journalists, prompting CODEO’s criticism of police inaction.
The NPP Minority caucus staged a walkout during the ceremony after Bagbin blocked their attempt to make a statement, escalating tensions. The caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, cited unresolved electoral disputes and alleged bias in the rerun process, according to MyJoyOnline. Bagbin urged unity, emphasizing Parliament’s role in fostering democratic stability.
Aubynn’s swearing-in marks a significant step in resolving the constituency’s electoral saga. Her addition strengthens the NDC’s legislative dominance, with 186 seats to the NPP’s 89. The increased female representation, now 14.86%, aligns with advocacy for gender equity in politics, though challenges like electoral violence remain a concern.
