US engineer and inventor Alan Riser, with support from Empower Playgrounds, has installed a new non-electric merry-go-round at Dedenya Basic School in the Asutuare district. The new merry-go-round replaces the previous electric one, which is no longer needed since the Dedenya community is now connected to the national electricity grid.

As part of the initiative, Alan trained local welders to build non-electricity-generating merry-go-rounds, a key step towards Empower Playgrounds’ mission for rural education and sustainability. The initiative also aimed to empower local communities, promote sustainability, and enhance livelihoods for local artisans.

According to Mr. Riser, “My goal is to create experiences that bring smiles to children’s faces and inspire a love for learning.” The merry-go-round aims to improve learning outcomes while creating fun memories for students.

The students of Dedenya Basic School are thrilled with their new merry-go-round, and the school community is grateful for the generosity.
