Ghana Police Nab Suspect with Illegal Arms in Nyasua
The Ghana Police Service arrested a 25-year-old man in Nyasua, Ashanti South Region, after discovering him with 207 rounds of assorted ammunition, including G3, AK-47, and CZ types. The arrest took place at the Asankare barrier during a routine check on a passenger bus, as reported by Regional Commander ACP Mr. Joseph Hammond.

Among the seized items were a bulletproof vest, military uniforms, two smocks with talismans, and suspected Indian hemp. The possession of military gear by a civilian violates Ghana’s Restriction on Use of Military Uniforms and Equipment Act, raising questions about the suspect’s intentions and potential ties to organized crime.

This incident underscores the persistent challenge of illegal arms trafficking in West Africa, where porous borders and socio-economic issues fuel such activities. The Ashanti Region, known for higher crime rates as per 2011 statistics from modernghana.com, remains a hotspot for such incidents, with investigations now underway.
The Ghana Police have urged the public to collaborate in reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing the need for community vigilance to curb crime. The suspect is in custody, and further inquiries will determine the source of the items and his motives.
