Renowned broadcaster Dr. Randy Abbey has expressed outrage over the invasion of Metro TV’s premises by armed men, including police officers, during a live broadcast of his Good Morning Ghana programme on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
According to Dr. Abbey, the group tried to force their way into the studio under the pretense of enforcing a court order. Speaking about a prior encounter, he revealed that the police had stopped him earlier in the week, blocking his car and attempting to seize it under the same court order.
“They said they were there to enforce a court order and seize my car. I told them, ‘This car is not for Metro TV. I’m not Metro TV, a shareholder, or a director.’ If they have a legitimate order, why are they targeting me personally?” Dr. Abbey questioned in a viral video.
During Wednesday’s incident, the group returned to Metro TV and attempted to break into the studio during the live broadcast. Dr. Abbey angrily confronted them, questioning the legitimacy of their actions. “Which court gave you authority to do this? You cannot execute orders this way, especially with armed policemen aiding such impunity,” he exclaimed.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement addressing the incident, leaving questions about the legitimacy of the operation and its implications for press freedom in Ghana. Dr. Abbey’s defiance underscores his demand for accountability and due process.
