Full investigation ordered into disappearance of over 1,300 ECG containers

A joint operation between the Korle Bu District Police Command and the National Security has led to the retrieval of electrical cables and equipment suspected to be linked to the missing containers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the Tema Port. Acting on a tip-off, the security team raided a scrap dealers’ site opposite the Korle Bu Mortuary in Accra on Sunday morning.

Chief Superintendent Kingsford Appiah, Commander at the Korle Bu District Police, confirmed the recovery of the items in an exclusive interview with the Ghanaian Times. However, no arrests were made, as all suspects fled upon hearing about the movement of the security team. Mr. John Sey, leader of the National Security team, indicated that the retrieved materials have since been moved to the National Security warehouse at Abelemkpe in Accra for safekeeping and further investigation.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the disappearance of 1,328 containers belonging to ECG at the Tema Port. He disclosed that out of 2,491 containers identified at the port, ECG could only account for a portion, leaving 1,328 containers unaccounted for, with an estimated value of GH¢1.5 billion.

Presenting an investigative report in Accra, Mr. Jinapor assured the public that a detailed probe would be conducted to trace how the containers went missing and to recover their monetary value. He stressed that appropriate measures are being put in place to prevent future losses, including relocating the remaining containers to a secure warehouse guarded around the clock by National Security.
