Ghana Makes History with Rugby League Coaching and Match Officials Courses
Ghana has achieved a historic milestone in rugby league development, becoming the first African nation to host Level 1 and Level 2 Rugby League Coaching and Match Officials Courses. This landmark event, held from January 5-8, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Legon Rugby Field, brought together participants from four regions and diverse sporting backgrounds.
Representatives from senior and basic schools, the National Sports Authority (NSA), immigration services, and rugby league clubs participated in an intensive four-day training program. Led by educators manager Martin Crick, coach tutor Gaby Haddad, and match official educator Phil Smith, the sessions provided both technical knowledge and practical skills to advance rugby league in Ghana and across Africa.
Madame Juliana Storey, President of the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG), hailed the achievement: “This historic milestone affirms Ghana’s commitment to rugby league development on the continent. We are proud to lead by example and pave the way for sustainable growth in the sport.”
Participants shared their enthusiasm for the initiative. Julius Amevor, a Level 2 coach from the NSA Ashanti Region, stated:
“The training has equipped me with the knowledge and tools to nurture talent and contribute to rugby league’s growth in Ghana.”
Jennifer Teiko Moncar, a Level 1 certified match official, highlighted the program’s importance:
“This experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of officiating and will help strengthen rugby league at the grassroots level.”
RLFG Technical Director, Marshall Nortey, emphasized the program’s significance:
“This initiative establishes a solid foundation for rugby league’s future in Ghana. The passion and dedication of the participants were truly inspiring.”

Jafaru A. Mustapha, General Manager of the RLFG, expressed pride in Ghana’s achievement, describing it as a significant step for the sport in Africa. He acknowledged the contributions of the educators, participants, and partners in making the program a success.
