Russia is expanding its influence in West Africa by leveraging media and cultural initiatives aimed at local journalists, influencers, and students. A new Russian media organization called African Initiative is leading this effort, promoting Russian narratives and cultural events in countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. This organization has inherited structures previously set up by the Wagner mercenary group, which was disbanded after its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin’s death.
Through events such as graffiti festivals, football tournaments, and educational workshops, African Initiative has been actively working to spread pro-Russian sentiments while targeting the United States with anti-Western narratives. Some stories on their platforms falsely claim that the US is conducting secret biological experiments in Africa.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort to gain influence in regions that have recently distanced themselves from Western powers like France. African journalists invited to Russia as part of press tours have reported on their experiences, often echoing Russian state propaganda.
Russia’s involvement in West Africa extends beyond cultural activities, with ties to security services and military engagements through groups like Africa Corps. Experts warn that these activities are reshaping the region’s political landscape, with Russia taking advantage of the void left by Western powers.
