Minister Uncovers AirtelTigo Deal, Calls Handlers “Enemies of the State”

Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has strongly criticized those who brokered the AirtelTigo transaction, labeling them as “enemies of the state” for burdening the government with massive debt.

AirtelTigo’s Financial Woes Exposed

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on March 24, 2025, Sam George revealed that despite the government acquiring AirtelTigo for just $1, the telecommunications company is now saddled with a staggering GH₵3.5 billion debt. He disclosed that GH₵1.5 billion of this debt is owed to the American Tower Company (ATC).

“Those who managed the AirtelTigo process are enemies of our state and individuals who have no sense of patriotism. Now that we have taken over the ministry, ATC has presented us with a bill of GH₵1.5 billion,” he stated.

Concerns Raised Over Mismanagement

The Minister further revealed that discussions with the American Embassy had highlighted concerns over AirtelTigo’s financial obligations, questioning who would settle the accumulating debt.

“The debt sitting on the books of AirtelTigo exceeds GH₵3.5 billion. So if someone told you they bought it for $1, who is going to pay the GH₵1.3 billion that is sitting there and accumulating interest?” he asked.

Previous Government Justifications Under Scrutiny

In November 2021, the Government of Ghana finalized the 100% ownership transfer of AirtelTigo from Bharti Airtel and Millicom International Cellular SA (Tigo) for a symbolic $1. The then Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, defended the deal, stating that it was necessary to protect jobs and sustain the telecom sector.

However, with the latest revelations, Sam George has vowed to present a full briefing to Parliament, shedding light on the true financial burden and alleged mismanagement of AirtelTigo.
