Sam George Outlines Plan to Lower Internet Data Prices in Ghana
Mr. Sam Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, reaffirmed his commitment to reducing data costs by the end of 2025 during a speech at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day event on May 19, 2025. Addressing public demands on X to eliminate over 39% in tariffs on data purchases, he emphasized a structured approach to tackling the issue.
Responding to social media pressure, George noted that he established a committee tasked with delivering a roadmap within 14 days to address high data prices. The committee submitted its plan in 13 days, outlining steps to correct eight years of market distortions. “I wish I could fix it arbitrarily, but it takes a carefully calculated effort,” he explained, urging the public to trust the process.
In an April 11, 2025, interview on TV3 with Roland Walker, the Ningo Prampram MP clarified that he cannot directly set data prices but can influence affordability through policy measures. During his ministerial vetting, George expressed confidence in achieving noticeable reductions in data costs by year-end, a promise he reiterated at the May event.
The minister’s pledge aligns with broader efforts to enhance digital access in Ghana, where high data costs have been a persistent concern. While some X users praised his proactive stance, others expressed skepticism, citing past unfulfilled promises. George’s roadmap, if implemented effectively, could alleviate financial burdens on consumers and boost Ghana’s digital economy.
