The Scrabble Association of Ghana, in conjunction with the World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA), is set to host the 2025 World English Scrabble Players Championship (WESPAC 2025) in Accra from November 10 to 16, 2025 at The Palms by Eagles (Holiday Inn).

This prestigious event launched in Accra on Thursday, 18th September, 2025 is expected to attract around 250 players from at least 48 countries, making it a significant milestone for Ghana’s sporting calendar.

According to Mr. Haruna Adamu, President of the Scrabble Association of Ghana, “We’re not just hosting, we’re showcasing Ghana. Our culture. Our warmth. Our fire. The championship aims to promote Scrabble as a tool for cognitive development, creativity, and discipline among young people”. He stated.

Hon. Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, represented by Mr. Gideon Hammond, Deputy Director, Administrations at National Sports Authority, emphasized that “Scrabble is not only a sport. It is an intellectual pursuit that sharpens our thinking, strengthens our vocabulary, and builds a culture of patience, logic, and problem-solving.”

The Minister assured that the government would engage the Ministry of Education to integrate Scrabble into schools, promoting its growth as a recognised recreational and competitive sport.

He added, “This is not charity; it is a smart investment,” commending sponsors and partners for their foresight and urging the wider corporate community to invest in the championship.

Hon. Kofi Adams also noted that “Hosting WESPAC 2025 is more than an event. It is a bold statement that Ghana is ready to play its part in global sport.” The championship offers a unique platform for Ghana to showcase its talents, promote national development, and inspire the next generation of Scrabble players.

According to Mr. Reginald Laryea, LOC Chairman of WESPAC, 219 players are expected to represent their countries at the main event, with 150 players participating in side events.

Ghana’s Charles Tachie-Menson who made an impressive mark by finishing eight (8th) at the championship in 2023, and his teammates would seek to make podium finish on home soil.

The brief but colorful launch which saw the official unveiling of the glamorous trophy, attracted the attendance of the General Secretary of the Ghana Olympic Committee, top sports personalities, partners, sponsors, and among others.
