Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has strongly criticized staff at the passport office for their alleged involvement in corrupt activities that have marred the reputation of the office. Expressing her frustration, the minister decried the frequent solicitation of money by passport employees and “goro boys and girls” to fast-track services for applicants.
Madam Botchwey highlighted the need to cleanse the passport system and subsequently relieved seconded staff from their duties, effective August 21. She bemoaned the tendency to attribute corruption accusations solely to politicians, emphasizing that some public and civil servants are also engaged in corrupt practices.
The minister revealed an ongoing investigation into the matter and assured that those responsible for the misconduct would face consequences if found guilty. Speaking to the press, she revealed, “We are currently probing the manipulation of our online system for illicit gains. Some names have emerged, indicating collusion with internal personnel. Staff members serving for over a year are hereby reassigned, effective Monday. Our goal is to restore integrity. We often blame politicians for corruption, but it is imperative to acknowledge that certain public and civil servants commit wrongful acts and falsely attribute them to politicians. Our efforts aim to restore order.”
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey also called for the removal of all security service personnel stationed at the Passport Office in Accra, asserting that their tenure has exceeded acceptable limits. Following an unannounced visit to the Passport Office, the minister expressed dissatisfaction with the exorbitant cost—over GH¢3000—imposed on Ghanaians for passport acquisition.
The Foreign Affairs Minister’s actions underscore the government’s commitment to eradicating corruption within the passport system and ensuring fair and transparent processes for all citizens.
