Sierra Leone calls back ambassador after drug seizure in Guinea embassy

Sierra Leone has recalled its ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, after a vehicle from the country’s embassy was impounded with seven suitcases of suspected cocaine. The vehicle was seized by Guinean authorities on Monday, and its occupants were detained on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba confirmed the recall but clarified that Ambassador Bangura was not in the vehicle and is not under investigation. The ambassador has been called back to Freetown to assist in clarifying the incident. Alongside the drugs, $2,000 in cash was discovered, although the exact quantity of the cocaine remains undisclosed.

Sierra Leone and Guinea have pledged full cooperation in investigating the matter, with Sierra Leone vowing accountability for anyone found guilty of drug trafficking. This incident highlights the region’s ongoing struggle with cocaine trafficking, as West Africa remains a key transit hub for drugs from Latin America heading to Europe.

The issue has taken a toll on local communities, with Sierra Leone grappling with rising drug misuse. Last year, President Julius Maada Bio declared drug abuse a national emergency, underscoring the country’s commitment to tackling the growing crisis.

The challenges of combating drug trafficking and abuse in West Africa, calls for strengthened regional collaboration and accountability.
