In an interview on 3 Music TV, Ghanaian socialite and singer Sister Derby opened up about the employment difficulties she faced after earning her master’s degree in the UK. Known for her hit “Kakalika Love,” Derby revealed that she struggled to secure a stable job after an initial internship ended, despite numerous applications.
“I applied for so many jobs, but I couldn’t get one,” she shared, noting that a professor explained the challenge was partly due to the economic recession in the UK, which led employers to prioritize citizens over other nationalities. Despite attending multiple interviews with prominent publishing companies and registering with various job agencies, she received no offers. Eventually, she managed to find work as a salesperson at a major pharmacy with the help of a Nigerian friend. However, she soon felt the role did not align with her qualifications as a master’s graduate and decided to leave.
This experience ultimately prompted her to return to Ghana, where she aimed to explore better opportunities. She recalls her journey back on a Ghana Airways flight in early 2010, a decision that marked a significant shift in her career path.
