Tragic Flood Incident Claims Young Boy in Dunkwa, Central Region

A six-year-old boy, Sylvester Owusu, is feared drowned after reportedly falling into the Anikoko River during a heavy downpour on May 18, 2025, in Dunkwa, Central Region. The incident occurred along the Dunkwa-Aggrey Road, where torrential rainfall from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. caused widespread flooding across the municipality.

According to family members, Sylvester was returning from Zongo Market to Oteng Crescent after running an errand for his grandmother. While attempting to cross a culvert over the swollen Anikoko River, he is believed to have slipped and been swept away by the powerful floodwaters, which rendered many waterways and footpaths hazardous.

The heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding, submerging parts of Dunkwa and disrupting travel and safety. Local authorities and residents have launched search efforts, but Sylvester’s whereabouts remain unknown, deepening the family’s distress. The incident highlights the dangers of inadequate drainage systems during Ghana’s rainy season.

Community leaders are calling for improved infrastructure to prevent future tragedies, noting that poorly maintained culverts and waterways exacerbate flooding risks. The Dunkwa municipality, like many areas in Ghana, faces recurring flood challenges, underscoring the need for urgent urban planning and disaster preparedness measures.
