Snoop Dogg Cuts Ties with Spotify Over Streaming Royalties, Partners with Tune.FM
Snoop Dogg has reignited the debate over streaming royalties, calling out Spotify for what he considers unfair payouts to artists.
During a 2023 appearance on the Business Untitled podcast, the hip-hop legend revealed his frustration, claiming that despite reaching a billion streams, his earnings were less than $45,000.
“They just sent me some sht from Spotify, where I got a billion streams… That sht wasn’t even $45,000,” he vented.
In response, Spotify disputed his claims, stating that a billion streams typically generate millions for rights holders.
A company spokesperson remarked, “It’s unfortunate to hear that Spotify’s payments didn’t make it through to Snoop… Hopefully, now that he owns Death Row Records, he’s seeing more of that money.”
This suggests that the issue might stem from rights ownership and distribution deals rather than Spotify’s direct payout system. However, Snoop remains unconvinced and has taken a decisive step.
In a bold move, he has partnered with Tune.FM, a Web3 streaming platform that uses blockchain technology to ensure artists receive direct and transparent payments.
His new single, “Spaceship Party,” is already exclusively available on Tune.FM, signaling a clear break from traditional streaming services.
“I don’t fk with Spotify anymore. I’m only on Tune.FM.”
Tune.FM’s founder and CEO, Andrew Antar, praised the collaboration, describing Snoop as a visionary in the industry.
“Snoop is the OG pioneer, always at the cutting edge of technology and new ways of doing business. He totally gets it, and we are ready to take on the world together,” he said.
This move marks a major shift in the streaming landscape, with artists seeking fairer revenue models through blockchain-based platforms.
