Residents of Soe, a suburb of Bolgatanga Municipality, are calling for justice after an 18-year-old guest house worker was allegedly raped by a military officer. The incident occurred on September 2, 2024, at the Siim Lina Guest House in the community, sparking outrage and demands for accountability.
The victim, whose identity is being protected, recounted that the officer arrived at the guest house around 9 a.m. and proposed marriage to her. She declined the offer, but the officer allegedly became aggressive, threatening her with a pair of scissors and forcibly dragging her into a room where he committed the heinous act.
“He said he loves me and wants to marry me. I said I was not interested. Then he held my hair, brandished scissors, and threatened to harm me,” she told reporters. Following the assault, the officer reportedly took photographs of her, leaving her terrified and unable to seek immediate help.
The guest house owner, Paulina Adongo, confirmed that the victim raised an alarm after the incident, prompting neighbors to apprehend the suspect. He was later handed over to military officers from the Abilba Barracks, who have since taken him into custody.
The assault has ignited widespread anger in Soe, with residents urging authorities to ensure the officer faces the full force of the law. The community continues to rally behind the victim, demanding swift action and justice for the young woman.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, with both military and civilian stakeholders closely monitoring developments. The incident highlights concerns over abuse of power and the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable individuals from violence and intimidation.
