South Africa remains firmly in the running to host the illustrious Women’s World Cup in 2027 with the winning candidate to be announced in May 2024.
FIFA revealed on Wednesday that the much-anticipated announcement of the chosen host is set to take place during the 74th FIFA Congress.
With women’s football rapidly rising in popularity worldwide, the 2027 World Cup is set to be the most fiercely contested bidding process ever.
Four bids representing the same number of confederations remain in the race to host the 2027 edition of FIFA’s women’s showpiece tournament:
- The Royal Belgian Football Association, the Royal Netherlands Football Association and the German Football Association (joint expression of interest)
- The Brazilian Football Association
- The South African Football Association
- The U.S. Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Association (joint expression of interest)
But the Rainbow Nation has an excellent chance to bring the Women’s World Cup to Africa for the first time ever.
South Africa formally submitted its bid back in May 2023, as required by FIFA regulations.
The final bids must be presented to FIFA by December 2023, followed by inspection visits in early 2024.
The 2027 hosts will then be revealed during May’s 74th FIFA Congress next year.
Bringing the Women’s World Cup to Africa would provide an enormous boost for the development of women’s football across the continent.
South Africa is aiming to make history by becoming the first African nation to host this prestigious global tournament.
With world-class stadiums and infrastructure already in place from the 2010 men’s World Cup, South Africa presents a compelling case to finally host World Cup football.
The 2027 tournament will be the 10th edition of the global showpiece event, which occurs every four years.
