British-Ghanaian Rapper Recognized for Philanthropy and Social Impact
British-Ghanaian rapper Michael Omari Owuo Jr., popularly known as Stormzy, has been nominated for an honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of Cambridge. The prestigious institution is recognizing the rapper for his outstanding philanthropic contributions in education, music, sports, and literature.
Stormzy’s philanthropic work includes the launch of the Stormzy Scholarship Programme in 2018, which funds the tuition and maintenance fees of two Black British students per year at Cambridge. In 2021, the initiative expanded with HSBC UK funding an additional ten students annually. So far, 55 students have benefited from the scholarship, with 2025 set to mark the largest group of graduates under the program.
The ‘Stormzy effect’ has also contributed to a significant increase in Black student applications to Cambridge, highlighting the impact of his advocacy for educational equity. Cambridge University praised his efforts, stating that his influence has inspired more Black British students to apply and pursue higher education.
