The family of Theophilus Ansah, an 18-year-old student from Ghana National College in Cape Coast, is demanding justice after his death on July 6, 2024.
They allege that negligence by school authorities, who denied him permission to seek medical attention for malaria, led to his death. Ansah’s health deteriorated, resulting in acute kidney injury and ultimately death from untreated malaria complications.
At a press conference, family spokesperson Lucy Quainoo called on the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES), and child rights organizations to investigate and ensure justice. The family claims that the delay in treatment exacerbated Ansah’s condition, necessitating dialysis which was unsuccessful.
Responding to the family’s concerns, Central Regional Director of GES, Emmanuel Essuman, expressed deep sympathy and support. He assured that reports from relevant parties would be submitted to the Director-General of GES and a committee would be established to thoroughly investigate the matter. The GES is going to uphold justice and address the family’s grievances.
