Suspected Phone Snatchers Escape After Car Accident in Ajumako
A group of suspected phone snatchers narrowly escaped death after their vehicle crashed and plunged into a ditch at Ajumako in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region.
According to reports by GHOne News’ Yaw Boagyan, the five suspects had been terrorizing communities within the district by snatching mobile phones, bags, and money from unsuspecting victims.
The latest incident occurred opposite the Ajumako Government Hospital, where the suspects robbed a newly posted nurse of her mobile phone, bag, and cash as she returned from work.
Accident During Escape
While fleeing, the suspects’ private car, with registration number CR-1784-12, crashed into an electricity pole along the Ajumako-Nkwantanum road before veering into a ditch. Despite the severity of the crash, the suspects managed to escape from the scene and were nowhere to be found at the time of reporting.
Victim’s Account
The victim, a newly posted nurse, told GHOne News that the suspects had approached her claiming she was suffering from a spiritual affliction and offered help. While she was distracted, they snatched her belongings and fled.
After raising an alarm, Good Samaritans gave chase on a motorcycle but later found that the suspects’ vehicle had been involved in the accident.
Discovery and Community Reaction
Upon searching the crashed vehicle, authorities found multiple stolen items, including:
• School bags
• Numerous mobile phones
• Clothes and shoes
• Food items
• Voter ID cards suspected to be from the Volta Region
• An empty wallet
Eyewitnesses revealed that the suspects initially posed as pastors claiming they were heading for a crusade.
Tense Scene Controlled by Police
The incident angered local residents, who attempted to set the vehicle ablaze. However, police officers arrived just in time to prevent further escalation and brought the situation under control.
Ongoing Investigations
The case has been reported to the Ajumako Hospital for further investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police are actively pursuing the suspects.
