A 35-year-old taxi driver, Paul Evename, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Jennifer Atieku, a 20-year-old UPSA student. The verdict, delivered by a 7-0 unanimous jury decision, found Evename guilty of intentionally killing Jennifer after she attempted to end their relationship. The tragic event, which occurred in 2015, shocked the local community and garnered widespread media attention.
During the trial, Evename admitted to his guilt and apologized to both families, acknowledging the pain he caused. Despite his request for leniency due to a wound he had sustained, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo had no discretion under the law but to impose a life sentence. The judge expressed sympathy for the loss of two young lives but emphasized the need for justice in such cases.
The prosecution, led by Principal State Attorney Seth Awere-Opanyinyena, presented compelling evidence, including testimonies from multiple witnesses, that proved Evename’s intent to murder Jennifer. According to the case, the relationship had deteriorated, leading Jennifer to block Evename’s phone number and end contact. Evename’s anger over this rejection led to the fatal confrontation.
Evename attempted to take his own life after the crime but was unsuccessful. He was hospitalized for his injuries and later faced trial for the murder of Jennifer. The case has brought closure to Jennifer’s family, though the loss remains deeply felt by those who knew her.
