Authorities Nab Tramadol, Fake Drugs at Tema Port
Tema Port authorities in Ghana seized a large haul of tramadol and counterfeit drugs hidden in a 20-foot container on May 29, 2025. The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) found the illegal shipment during a routine check, uncovering 120 slabs of suspected narcotic drugs. The discovery has sparked a major investigation into drug smuggling networks.
The container, shipped from abroad, was meant to pass through the port unnoticed. After a tip-off, NACOC officers, working with port security, stopped the shipment. A driver linked to the container was arrested and is now in custody, facing charges for possessing illegal drugs. The suspect’s name has not been released as the case is ongoing.

The seized drugs include tramadol, a strong painkiller often abused, and fake medicines that could harm users. Authorities are testing the substances to confirm their makeup and estimate their street value. NACOC says this bust is part of their efforts to stop illegal drugs from entering Ghana’s markets.
The driver was brought to court and remanded until June 10, 2025, for further investigation. NACOC is working with international partners to trace the source of the shipment and identify others involved. This bust follows other recent drug seizures in Ghana, showing a growing fight against smuggling.

The case has raised concerns about fake drugs flooding the market, which could put lives at risk. Authorities urge the public to report suspicious activities at ports to help stop illegal trade and protect communities from harmful substances.
