The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) under Ghana’s Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced a potential nationwide strike, set to commence on November 18, 2024, if long-standing issues regarding Conditions of Service agreements remain unresolved. The strike threat follows prolonged delays in finalizing service agreements for TEWU members across multiple educational institutions, including the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.
Negotiations for these agreements have dragged on for years without resolution, leading to mounting frustration among TEWU members. In a recent statement, the union expressed deep disappointment over government agencies’ inability to bring negotiations to a close, despite over four years of discussions and reviews. Many TEWU members had expected a resolution, but ongoing delays have led to significant dissatisfaction.
With the new academic year underway, TEWU emphasized that many of its members—particularly those involved in admissions and critical school operations—are working under uncertain conditions. This uncertainty, they warned, could impact the smooth operation of educational institutions across Ghana.
TEWU is calling on stakeholders to take immediate action to conclude these service agreements, as an indefinite strike could disrupt the education sector nationwide. The union stressed the importance of a timely government response to ensure that educational institutions remain stable and functional for the benefit of students and staff alike.
